Please confirm that you have received this email. You are to answer both of the questions below for this two-week exam. Each of your answers should be roughly equal in length, each approximately 20 to 25 double-spaced pages (4,000 to 5,500 words), not including notes or illustrations. Please include the question at the beginning of each of your answers. You are to turn in six copies of your answers by 5 PM, Friday April 27. At the end of the booklet of answers, please include a copy of your dissertation prospectus. Good luck!

1. Field Question:
The socialist republics of Eastern Europe have experienced wide-ranging forms of social, economic and political restructuring following the end of the Cold War. In what ways is the social transformation of these societies intertwined with the production of urban and architectural space? In the first part of your answer, select two "post-socialist" cities and discuss how social restructuring over the last two decades has been influenced (and enabled by) changes in the organization of cities and regions. In the second part of your answer, consider the same cities in terms of the relationship between housing and land markets, and then explore how the architectural and urban design of housing has been affected by the processes of post-socialist restructuring. Use specific examples to illustrate your argument. Your answer must exclude Chinese cities.

2. Method Question:
Identify and discuss the strengths and limitations of three methodological approaches to the study of housing markets. How are these approaches shaped by the theoretical and disciplinary outlooks that inform them? Are they mutually exclusive, or can they be employed together? What are the benefits of "mixed mode" approaches? Your answer should draw upon relevant examples of research to support your argument.
