本人日內將前往國內，預計會逗留一段時間。由於在國內是不能登入blogspot 的，所以這網綕將會告一段落。我會另外再找一個可以在國內用到的網站，最大機會是 用 mysinablog (必要時是 mysinablog.cn！)，屆時會以電郵通知各方好友。

基於在國內是不能溜覽 blogspot 和 xanga 的，因此我將無法觀看朋友們的網誌，請大家見諒，亦萬請保持聯絡！(唔通真係要 join facebook?)

中秋．李白．廣東十虎

《月下獨酌》

花間一壺酒，獨酌無相親；舉杯邀明月，對影成三人。

月既不解影，影徒隨我身；暫伴月將影，行樂需及春。

我歌月徘徊，我舞影零亂；醒時同交歡，醉後各分散。

永結無情遊，相期邈雲漢。

我（以及大部份人吧）認識李白舉杯邀明月，對影成三人這兩句詩，是 out of context 的。即是說，獨獨只認識這兩句，不知其上文下理。只知道李白的豪情，自己一條冷，在月色之下暢飲，與影作伴，享受一個人的寧靜，何其瀟灑；而不知道這傢伙，在緊接的兩句月既不解飲，影徒隨我身所流露的那份孤獨。

有月，有影，若不能明瞭我，又與我何干呢！好sorrow啊！

我得以認識這首寂寞的《月下獨酌》，郤是緣自亞洲電視多年前一套叫《英雄：十虎》的劇集。故事講述廣東十虎的事跡，其中一虎是人稱蘇乞兒的蘇燦。話說蘇燦是一個玩世不恭，終日流連花艇，但為人見義勇為的二世祖，心裡雖然喜歡在花艇旁賣粥的少女矇豬（姚嘉妮飾演，我的家人至今都叫她作矇豬），但又故意常常欺負她，與她鬥氣，真是電視劇的例牌橋段。故事的高潮是關於這富家子蘇燦，因囂張拔扈而得罪惡勢力，以至全家遭人謀殺。蘇燦大受刺激，失去踪影。矇豬十心担心，四出找尋，終於給她發現了喝得爛醉如泥的蘇燦。亞視最精彩之處，就是安排矇豬遠遠的站在街角，看著蘇燦，不說上一句話，沒有如無線的劇集般，男女主角總是竭斯底里的相擁狂號，口水升鼻涕直流。相反，在銀色的月光之下，女的靜靜站著，男的一邊舞著醉劍，一邊唸著這首李白的詩。意境一流，亞視好嘢！

Norman Foster to Remodel Camp Nou

Norman Foster is going to remodel Camp Nou, the home stadium of Barcelona Football Club. Completed in 1957, Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity of 98,772. The remodelling work will add an extra 10,000 seats to the stadium.

這兩張相片是從網上搜尋得來的。曾向來自哥倫比亞的A同學提及中國民居的狗洞，A大感興趣，很想知道 "why need a separate entrance for the dog"。我也不大清楚，網上的資料說是為了方便狗隻在晚上關掉大門後，仍然可以回家，不知是否屬實。

1. Field Question:
The socialist republics of Eastern Europe have experienced wide-ranging forms of social, economic and political restructuring following the end of the Cold War. In what ways is the social transformation of these societies intertwined with the production of urban and architectural space? In the first part of your answer, select two "post-socialist" cities and discuss how social restructuring over the last two decades has been influenced (and enabled by) changes in the organization of cities and regions. In the second part of your answer, consider the same cities in terms of the relationship between housing and land markets, and then explore how the architectural and urban design of housing has been affected by the processes of post-socialist restructuring. Use specific examples to illustrate your argument. Your answer must exclude Chinese cities.

2. Method Question:
Identify and discuss the strengths and limitations of three methodological approaches to the study of housing markets. How are these approaches shaped by the theoretical and disciplinary outlooks that inform them? Are they mutually exclusive, or can they be employed together? What are the benefits of "mixed mode" approaches? Your answer should draw upon relevant examples of research to support your argument.

My Dissertation - Questions and Propositions

What is the role of the state in China’s process of urbanization over the course of the 20th century, when the nation changes from a nationalist regime, to the Socialist, and then to the Post-socialist? How do the state, the society and the market shape, and is shaped, by this urbanization process? How has this process affect the urban and architectural landscape of China?

Four propositions

1. Over the course of the 20th century, and despite of regime changes, urbanization in China was, and is, a state-led process.
2. 
   The first proposition, the state’s totalitarian role in the process of urbanization, is attained through the dominance over land ownership and land development made possible by political campaigns, propaganda, and legislation.
3. 
   The redistribution of resources involved in the second proposition is the major cause of urban conflict in 20th century China and contributes to the making of a contentious state-society relationship.
4. 
   The built environment is the site of the urban conflict. It is shaped by, and contains, the contesting yet intertwined forces from the state, the society and the market.

數年前有一本教人運用英文標點符號的小書，取了個幽默的書名，叫 "Eats, Shoots & Leaves"。書名中的小逗點，有其奇妙之處，可以將同一句句子變成完全不同的意思。

Principal High Buildings of the Old World

Published in 1889

正在讀 Anthony King 的 Spaces of Global Cultures，他論及 "symbolism of height"，因而使我認識了這張有趣的十九世紀插圖。Anthony King 認為，作畫者其實想表達一種大美國主義 - Washington Monument (代表以美國為首的 New World) 比任何有歷史價值的建築物 (代表 Old World) 都要高。

我反而對以下兩點有興趣：

1. 比薩斜塔，原來比梵蒂岡聖彼德大教堂和佛羅倫斯大教堂還要矮小呢，只跟 Hagia Sophia 差不多，是矮仔啊！
2. 最左手邊黃色的那座塔，索引稱為 "Porcelain Tower, Nankin, China," 如無估計錯誤，那應該是南京的靈谷寺。該寺離明孝陵不遠，在民國時期由美國建築師 Henry Murphy 改建。

Double Helix Staircase

香港建築界前輩李景勲先生發明了 "鉸剪梯" 以省空間。其實早在文藝復興時期己有人提出這個概念。在法國 Loire Valley 的 Chateau de Chambord，就有一條 Double Helix Staircase，原理其實跟 DNA 的結構一樣，與鉸剪梯意念相彷。設計者據說就是大名頂頂的 Leonado da Vinci 。

It's gonna be all right!

一直都不明白，為什麼有人會喜歡在公共厠所內塗鴉。這文化也不是香港獨有，美國也如是。今天在大學 Dwinelle Hall 的一個厠格內，就有人大大隻字地寫上 "It's gonna be all right!"

令我注意到的卻是，在這句子附近，密麻麻地寫滿了留言。大多數留言者說，她們因不同的原因，心情很低落，故此看到這句鼓勵說話時，都覺得很感動。我不禁想像，她們可能有很多煩惱，不能向人傾訴，不懂向人傾訴；而她們需要的，可能只是簡單的一句安慰說話。

Words of Comfort，請不要吝嗇。

王丹﹕對香港有特殊感情(轉貼)

轉貼這篇報導的原因，是因為在對於『會否聘請王丹任教』的這個問題上，港大的 Cunich 教授確實比城大的那位宋先生得體得多。宋先生的回覆，雖然很現實，但亦令人對學術自由產生懷疑。

明報專訊】八九民運學生領袖王丹計劃於今年完成博士論文後，6月申請本港大學教席。王丹向本報說，他對香港有一份特殊的感情，這感情「當然與六四有關」，來香港亦可以讓他離祖國近一點，讓 年逾七十的母親王凌雲探望他時，毋須長途跋涉。他未決定申請到哪間本港大學任教，「能有大學敢於找我，我就已經很感謝了」。

王丹於民運後被判入獄，1998年獲批保外就醫、流亡美國至今，現於哈佛大學攻讀歷史學博士學位。王丹昨日透過電郵說，希望到港教書的原因有3個，首要是對香港的特殊感情，其次是因為香港離開中國更近，「今天如果中共一時不允許我回國，至少也應當讓我離自己的祖國近一些」。另一原因是家人來港探望他，會比到美國方便，「我母親已經過了70歲，長途跋涉對她是很大的體力負擔，希望中共能多少有一些人性上的政策調整」。

他擔心香港的大學會受到政治壓力，但他還是會申請，「因為我實在太希望能離中國近一些」。他未決定申請哪間大學，如果有一間「敢於」聘請他，他希望任教中國現代史和台灣現代史。他題為「1950年代兩岸國家暴力對比研究」的博士論文預計於6月完成，屆時會開始找工作，若在香港找不到，會嘗試在美國或台灣找。

香港大學歷史系主任Peter Cunich說，該系目前有兩個教席空缺，一是教授中國近代史的教席，另一是專責研究的助理教授席。若王丹申請到該系任教，其學術水平是唯一的考慮準則，校方不會過問申請者的政治或宗教背景。

城大專業進修學院首席講師宋立功說，王丹這次說要來港的手法高調了一些，有「搏宣傳」成分，相信特首曾蔭權不敢批准他來港，香港的大專院校亦不會「做傻事」聘請王丹，以免影響他們跟內地院校的研究合作。

What is a "discourse"?

一直都不能掌握 "Discourse" 的意思。今天旁聽 Prof. Hart 的 Development Theories & Practices，她就解釋了 什麼是 "Discourse" ，簡單，清楚，易明！

A discourse is not just languages or talkings in popular sense, but a whole group of statements which represents ways of talking about a topic. Not just one statement or concept but a whole set of statement or concepts that put together for a discursive formation. A discourse, therefore, can produce an understanding of, and prevent other kind of understanding of, a particular issue.

Modernization, Modernism, Modernity

Modernization (social process)
是自18世紀末，法國大革命之後，所開始的一個全球性社會進化過程。自此，人類進入一個大混亂時期，社會充滿機會，奇遇，刺激，危險和矛盾，既不斷創新，亦不斷破壞。

Modernism (vision and values)
因著Modernization而孕育出來的一種價值觀，普遍認為人類可以駕馭這個大混亂時期。

Modernity (experience)
現今的人共同擁有，分享的經驗。

一向都有用 Wikipedia 來搜尋資料，貪其方便快捷，又有中英查詢。今天竟然意外地發現，Wikipeida原來有粵語版，真係好驚訝，好 "亞尾乘"！

P.S. 留意! 在粵語版維基百科裡，"Featured Content" 被翻譯做 "正嘢"，好掂！

我的恩典夠你用的

同一天內，兩度讀到同一節經文。

他對我說, “我的恩典夠你用的，因為我的能力是在人的軟弱上顯得完全。” 所以，我更喜歡誇自己的軟弱，好叫基督的能力覆庇我。（林後12:9）

打開一個舊電腦檔案，想要找回一些資料，卻發現我在頁尾打了這段經文。我想起，是因為兩個多月前開始學打倉頡，我隨意的就打了這段經文練習。豈料，靈修時又正好讀到這段經文，這必然是我2007年要學習的功課！

一條問題 (2007.1.07第二次修改)

如果四九年的革命是一次農民革命，那麼，革命的目的應該是讓農民大翻身，提高農民的政治及社會地位。中共靠土地改革達到這個政治目的，將土地重新分配，使耕者有其田，免農民受地主的剝削。土改大量減少了地主的數目，並將人民二分為郊農和城市人，使前者地位遠高於後者。可是，只短短四十年的光境，曾經一度無償使用的土地，在改革開放後再次在市場上流通。中國政府在八十年代末推行另一輪土改，通過修改憲法使政府成為最大的地主，土地可供有償使用。 中國政府如何將土地由一項政治工具，變為國家的收入來源？又如何合理化這個轉變？這個轉變對社會帶來怎樣的影響？

Maurice Meisner有這樣的看法: 他認為毛澤東的著作並無回應最重要的一個問題-
"… how a Communist party, almost totally separated from the cities and the urban proletariat and based entirely on peasant support, could carry out a revolution that aimed to bring about a socialist society, albeit proceeded by a “bourgeois” phase of unspecified duration. (46)"

"For while the peasants were very much interested in socioeconomic reform and the redistribution of land, not even Mao, with all his faith in the inherent “socialist activism” of the peasant masses, really believed that the peasants, as a class, were inclined (spontaneously or otherwise) to socialism. At their radical best, the peasants were interest in the equal distribution of land on the basis of individual peasant proprietorship – an agrarian revolution to be sure, but some which precluded the socialist reorganization of society, by either Marxist or non-Marxist definitions. There is nothing in Maoism or in Chinese social reality to suggest that the peasantry, as such, is the bearer of the socialist future. (46)

Who then were to be the agents of socialist revolution? In Maoist theoretical literature we find little more than repetitions of the Marxist orthodoxy that the socialist revolution is to be led by the proletariat and the Leninist orthodoxy that the Communist Party is the vanguard of the proletariat and the incarnation of “proletarian consciousness.” Mao adds only the concept of “the people’s democratic dictatorship,” a notion born in the united-front strategy of the Yan’an era and formally proclaimed in 1949, on the eve of the establishment of the People’s Republic. The formula for the bourgeois stage of the revolution provides for a government representing a coalition of four classes (proletariat, peasantry, petty bourgeoisie, and national bourgeoisie) but a collation under “proletarian hegemony,” which is to say, ultimate political power resides in the Communist Party. (46)"

下星期我將會到曼谷，參加IASTE兩年一度的會議。第一次去曼谷，心情好興奮啊！我己經想像著做Spa，食海鮮了，差點忘記自己還有兩份Term papers要趕呢！不過最開心的是可以路經香港，好嘢！

今次會議，我將會present一篇關於近年澳門賭場建築的文章，主要討論誇國主義（transnationalism）對城市環境的影響。

我最憎"嘉鄧零"!

我的Co-op宿舍規定, 每人每個學期要貢獻兩個半小時，去改善宿舍的居住環境。經過大家投票後，決定重整宿舍的front yard。唉！咁多樣嘢，我最鬼憎就係做Gardening！以前我已經試過一次，得兩個字：辛苦！

今次的Habitation Project，由喜歡園藝的宿友S和負責維修的宿友N策劃！

在兩個半小時內，我完成了三項工序。第一項工作，就是清除花槽裡的雜草，啊，簡單！

Front yard的花槽種的主要是番茄，還有小量香草和兩棵蘿蔔。

除完草之後，宿友N叫我替他填氹。好彩只係要我填，唔洗我掘啫！嘻嘻！不過我剷啊剷，咦！做咩咁硬嘅？原來泥下面有個渠蓋，喂，整鬼我咩！

填完氹，宿友S就話，不如你繼續除草啦。千忻唔好以為除草係揸住一架剪草機，喺綠悠悠的草地上行來行去 。其實係要徒手，將圍住靚靚玫瑰花嘅野草連根拔起，好鬼辛苦！而且毫無成功感，因為野草除不盡，春風吹又生，好快又生番晒出黎，簡直係白做！最辛苦係要成日踎喺度，對於踎低起身見頭暈的我，真係好慘！

宿友J原本是負責鋤地，點知佢一時大意，鋤爆左條水渠，好彩發現條水渠係已經廢棄左。但係佢見過鬼怕黑，唔肯鋤地，改為剷好鬼臭嘅枯草加垃圾。

恐共的小龍?

今天上課時，刑教授提到有趣的一點。她說她的論文指導，著名學者Manuel Castel， 曾指出亞洲四小龍的一個共通點，就是在它們在冷戰時期，都經歷過一個被共產主義入侵的危機：香港和台灣恐懼中共，新加坡恐懼馬共，南韓恐懼北韓。這樣的危機時期提供了一種合理性(legitimacy)，造就了政府施行大規模的經濟建設 (economic consolidation)以穩人心，但同時亦鞏固了政權。（即係強政厲治？）所以亞洲四小龍的經濟奇蹟並非偶然，而是有其歷史因由。

首都計劃

民國時期定都南京, 中央政府成立[首都建設委員會],負責製定"首都計劃"。 計劃書其中一章名為"建築形式之選擇"，要求首都的建築物儘量採用中國形式，所持理據都幾"夾硬黎", 節錄如下:

"要以採用中國固有之形式為最宜，而公署及公共建築物尤當儘盡量採用，所以採用此形式之故,其中最大理由,約有下列數項，茲分別論之。
其一，所以發揚光大本國固有之文化也。
其二，顏色之配用最為悅目也．．．與外國建築物之純用一色，黯淡無華者迴然不同。
其三，光綫空氣最為充足也．．．若用外國建設局方式，則適與相反。
其四，具有伸縮之作用利於分期建造也．．．外國之房屋，則殊缺乏此項之伸縮力。"

Taliesin West

趁着到 Phoenix 參加會議（見下文），參觀了 Frank Lloyd Wright 設計的Taliesin West ，果然好掂！Taliesin West位於Scottsdale郊區，是 FLW的（住所＋工作室＋學校）。話說當年FLW在Arizona完成了一個工程後，醫生說他的身體情況不適宜回到寒冷的北部居住。於是他在1937年，在Scottsdale這樣的沙漠地方買下了一塊土地。為了籌錢興建他心目中的理想居所，他接下了一項工程，就是後來世界聞名的Falling Water。所以，Taliesin West實制上是和Falling Water同時設計的。我參加的是一個Night Tour，雖然晚上的燈光很漂亮，但卻拍不到好照片，十分遺憾。

Taliesin West不僅是一所私人住宅，也是一所由FLW親自主理的建築學校， 每年只會招收廿七名學生，這傳統至今没有改變。整個建築群就是由FLW和當年的第一批學生，在只有一部Concrete Mixer的情況下親手興建，真有點不可思議。據說當年的廿七名學生當中，只有兩位尚在人世，他們偶然還會客串當Taliesin West的導遊呢。

據說FLW當年平價買了十幅中國清朝古董，之所以是平價，是因為每幅都有點殘缺。

鳯凰城之旅

十月下旬時參加了Urban History Association的會議，並且發表了一篇關於民國首都建設的文章。其實短短二十年的民國時期，曾經出現過多個首都：

• 辛亥革命成功之後，孫中山率領的臨時政府定都南京
• 孫中山辭退臨時大總統後，袁世凱遷都北京
• 北伐成功後，汪精衞率領的國民黨左派定都武漢；同時，蔣介石率領的國民黨右派定都南京
• 蔣介石於權利鬥爭中勝出，南京順利成章成為首都
• 抗日戰爭時期，國民政府曾短暫遷至洛陽，後又遷回南京
• 南京淪陷之前，國民政府決定遷都重慶；後來正式宣佈南京為首都，重慶為陪都
• 南京大屠殺後，汪精衞投靠日本，於南京成立傀儡政府，宣稱國民政府已回歸南京
• 抗戰勝利後，蔣介石率領國民政府還都南京，但保留重慶為陪都的地位，直至49年國民黨避走台灣

會議於Arizona州，Phoenix旁的小城 Tempe 內的Arizona State University舉行。這是我第一次到美國的中部沙漠地區，感覺都幾新鮮。而且四週圍都可以見到比人還要高的仙人掌，不過唔記得咗影相，嘥晒！

最愛大南瓜

前陣子萬聖節，宿友們買來了幾個大南瓜作裝飾，確是非常可愛！來到美國以後，對這裡的食物真的不敢恭維，唯獨是對南瓜，簡直覺得是一個　"開心大發現"，無論是南瓜湯，南瓜蓉，以及我最喜愛的南瓜批，都十分美味!

喜歡園藝的宿友Ｓ在柏克箂植物公園兼職，常常會拿一些蔬果回來，把飯堂點綴得漂漂亮亮，還有點像教會感恩節的裝飾呢！

雙十天下圍攻

雙十嗰日咁啱上一位台灣教授嘅堂, 同學仔當中亦有一個係台灣人(全班得七個, 中港台各一)~教授忽然發牙痕, 大講圍扁事件~ 佢話, 台灣係一個睇落去好似好政治化嘅社會(a politicized society), 但係其實一啲都唔政治化~ 亞扁為左減少遊行人數, 特別延長中秋假期~ 即係原本上星期五係中秋假, 今個星期二係國慶, 亞扁就乘機放埋星期一, 連埋週末, 就變成連續五日嘅長假期! 結果呢? 就係好多人因為有長假, 就寧願出埠去旅行而唔去反扁,非常現實!

至於亞扁會唔會(自動)下台? 我就認同RTHK蔡東豪先生所講: 亞扁唔係普通人, 呢個江山係佢搵條命搏番黎, 佢係唔會俾人圍兩圍就退縮, 佢一定會死撐落去!

華叔, 祝你長命百歲!

上星期四華叔(司徒華)到訪本校, 中港研討社舉行了一個小小的座談會, 談論香港回歸後的轉變。其中提及幾項有趣(?)的事情:

1. 
   關於回歸後的三次人大釋法, 華叔直斥其有違基本法, 其中一個原因是基本法中列明, 只有當本港提出要求時, 人大才能釋法, 人大是不能主動對本港的法例提出解釋。孤陋寡聞的我一直忽略了這一點。
2. 
   華叔提到2003年的七一大遊行, 溫家寶總理當時其實人在深圳, 整天都守在電視機旁看遊行的新聞。溫總見到香港的大場面, 不相信 “只有”五十萬遊行人士。於是他下令警方事後翻看所有錄影帶, 忠實地計算參與人數, 結果是67萬5千人。
3. 
   華叔又說, 教育界跟曾蔭權商討學校縮班問題, 曾蔭權兩次翻舊帳, 說教育界在2005年特首選舉時, 沒有作他的提名人。華叔話曾蔭權當時已有七百幾票提名票, 真係多兩票唔多, 咁都嬲好鬼少氣!

在 Q&A 時, 我的朋友問華叔, 如何評價民主黨的發展, 特別在公民黨成立之後。華叔支吾以對, 不肯正面回答。於是我再問, 公民黨打正旗號想做執政黨, 他有什麼看法? 華叔打斷我的提問, 興沖沖的說: “我話佢地都戇居! 做到特首先叫執政黨, 佢地會唔會做到特首吖? 亞爺會唔會批吖?”看來公民黨想派人參選特首這個想法, 並不能得到泛民認同。(註: 幾日後陳太話唔會選, 公民黨所想營造的“泛民共主”落空!)

最後我們跟華叔拍照和握手。華叔雖然精神甚佳, 但不竟年紀不輕, 我朋友不禁跟他說: “華叔, 祝你長命百歲!”
